Tips and limits
- Start from the largest original you have. Enlarging a small picture to 1080 pixels makes it look soft.
- Use “fit inside” with a white or black border when you do not want any part of a group photo cut off.
- Instagram may change its recommended sizes over time, so check the current guidance in the app if exact framing matters.
Resize Image for Instagram
Instagram shows pictures in a few fixed shapes, and a photo with a different shape gets cropped by the app in ways you may not like. Resize it here first and you decide what is kept. The sizes on this page are 1080 × 1080 for a square post, 1080 × 1350 for a portrait post, 1080 × 566 for a landscape post and 1080 × 1920 for a story or Reel.
Choose “fill and crop” to cover the whole frame, or “fit inside” to keep the entire picture and add borders in a color you pick. A 4:5 portrait post takes up the most room in the feed, so it is a strong default for photos of people. To frame the subject yourself before resizing, open the crop tool, and to keep upload times short use the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram post be?
The common sizes are 1080 × 1080 for square, 1080 × 1350 for portrait and 1080 × 566 for landscape posts. All of them are 1080 pixels wide.
What is the size of an Instagram story?
1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical picture. Reels use the same shape.
How do I resize an image to a specific size in pixels?
Add the image, choose “Pixels”, type the width or height you need and press “Resize images”. Keep the ratio locked to avoid stretching.
How do I resize a photo by percentage?
Choose “Percent” and drag the slider. 50% halves the width and the height, which gives a file about a quarter of the pixel count.
What is the difference between resizing and compressing?
Resizing changes the number of pixels. Compressing keeps the pixels but stores them more efficiently. For the smallest file, do both.
