Troubleshooting
- Permission blocked: click the lock or camera icon in the address bar and set Camera to Allow, then reload the page. In Safari: Safari › Settings for This Website › Camera.
- Black picture: remove the privacy shutter or cover, and check that the laptop’s camera switch or keyboard key is on.
- Wrong camera: pick another camera in the list, for example the built-in one instead of a virtual or phone camera.
- In use by another app: close video-call apps and other tabs that use the camera, then start again.
- Low quality: clean the lens, add light in front of you, and try a higher resolution; some cameras only offer 720p.

Frequently asked questions
Is my camera image uploaded?
No. The preview and snapshots stay in your browser. Snapshots are saved to your device only when you press the button.
How do I know my camera’s real resolution?
The page shows the size reported by the camera after your browser negotiates it. If you ask for 1080p and get 720p, that is the most the camera can do.
Why is the picture black?
A privacy shutter, a disabled camera key, the wrong camera or another app using the camera are the usual reasons. See the troubleshooting tips.
What does the frame rate mean?
It is how many pictures per second the camera sends. We show the rate reported by the camera and a measured rate based on frames actually shown.
Why is the preview mirrored?
Mirroring feels natural, like a mirror. Turn it off to see the picture as others see it.
Check your camera before the call
A quick webcam check can save an awkward start to a video call. This page opens your camera, shows a live preview, and tells you the real resolution and frame rate it delivers. You can switch between several cameras, mirror the picture, and take a snapshot to check lighting, framing and focus.
The resolution switcher asks for 720p, 1080p or 4K and reports what the camera actually provides, so you can tell a full HD camera from one that only claims it. If the picture is black or the camera cannot be opened, the page identifies the cause, such as a blocked permission or another app using the camera, and gives the right steps for your browser. The camera stops as soon as you press Stop or leave the page, and no video is ever uploaded.
The test is also handy before you buy or recommend a camera, when you compare the built-in camera with an external one, or when you check a new monitor. It shows what the camera really delivers, which is often different from the number on the box.
