How to Record Your Laptop Screen Without Software
4 min read
To record your laptop screen without software, open the screen recorder in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, choose what to share, record, and download the video. No installation, account or watermark is involved.
You can capture the entire screen, one window or a single browser tab, with sound from the tab or computer and your microphone. This guide walks through the options so the first recording comes out right.
Steps
You need a laptop or desktop computer. Phone browsers do not let websites record the screen; the recorder page explains the built-in options for iPhone and Android.
- 1
Open the recorder
Go to Screen Recorder in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. The page tells you which video format your browser will save.
- 2
Choose the sound you need
Tick “Record my microphone” to add your voice. Tick the tab or system sound option to include the audio of what you are showing, where your browser provides it.
- 3
Press “Choose screen and start”
Your browser asks what to share: the entire screen, a window or a tab. Pick one. For the best audio, share a single tab in Chrome or Edge and tick “Share tab audio”.
- 4
Wait for the countdown
A 3-2-1 countdown gives you a moment to switch to what you want to show. Close notifications and private tabs first, since they appear in the video.
- 5
Record, pause and stop
Use Pause and Resume to skip a part, and press “Stop recording” (or the browser’s stop-sharing button) when you are done.
- 6
Preview and download
Watch the preview to confirm picture and sound, then download the file. The recording is saved only when you download it.
Built-in alternatives on your computer
macOS has its own screenshot toolbar, opened with Shift-Command-5, which includes screen recording. Windows has recording features in the Xbox Game Bar and in newer versions of the Snipping Tool. These are good choices if you record often, but they vary by version and some capture only a single app, so a browser recorder is handy when you are on a computer you do not control.
Before an important recording, check your microphone with the mic test and your camera with the webcam test. If the video is too large to send, shorten it or share a link instead; recordings are held in memory while you work, so for sessions longer than about 20 minutes it is better to record in parts.
Plan a recording people can follow
A few minutes of preparation make a clear recording. Write a short list of the steps you will show, close tabs and notifications, and zoom the page a little so that text is readable on a phone. Say what you are about to click before you click it, and pause for a second after each step.
Keep recordings short, ideally under five minutes. Several short videos are easier to follow, easier to edit and lighter to send than one long one. Name each file after what it shows, and watch the first few seconds back before recording the rest, to be sure the sound and the picture are right.
Common problems
Nothing happens when I press Start
Your browser may have blocked the screen-sharing prompt. Look for a blocked-popup or permission icon in the address bar and allow it.
The recording has no sound
Share a single browser tab and tick “Share tab audio” in Chrome or Edge. Sharing the entire screen on macOS may not include system sound. Add your microphone if you need your voice.
On a Mac the screen is black or the option is missing
Allow your browser under System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, then restart the browser.
The file is WebM and an app wants MP4
WebM plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, VLC and most modern players. If an app only accepts MP4, use a converter, or record in Safari or recent Chrome, which can save MP4.
Frequently asked questions
How do I record my laptop screen for free without software?
Open the screen recorder in your browser, press start, choose a screen, window or tab, and download the video when you stop.
Can I record my screen with sound?
Yes. Add your microphone, and for the sound of a tab share that tab in Chrome or Edge and tick “Share tab audio”.
Is there a time limit or a watermark?
No watermark and no fixed limit, but the video is kept in memory, so very long recordings are better split into parts.
