Frequently asked questions

Does the timer keep working in a background tab?

Yes. It stores the exact end time and compares it with your device clock, so it is accurate even if the browser slows down the tab. The alarm sounds when the time is up.

What happens if I reload the page?

The timer carries on from where it was. Its state is saved in your browser only.

Can I choose the alarm sound?

Yes. Pick from four tones and set the volume. The sounds are generated in your browser, with no audio files.

Can I keep my screen on while it runs?

Turn on “Keep screen on” if your browser supports it. It stops the display from dimming until you leave the page.

Are there ready-made timers for common times?

Yes. Open the timers by duration below, for example the 5 minute timer or the 10 minute timer, each on its own page.

A free online countdown timer that stays accurate

Whether you are cooking, studying, exercising or running a classroom activity, a countdown timer is one of the most useful small tools. This one starts with a single click, shows large digits you can read from across the room, and plays an alarm when the time is up. Choose a preset from one minute to an hour, or type any combination of hours, minutes and seconds.

Most online timers simply count ticks, which makes them drift when a browser slows down a hidden tab. This timer remembers the exact moment it should finish and checks it against your device clock, so it stays accurate and survives a page reload. It shows the remaining time in the tab title, can keep your screen awake, offers fullscreen for presentations, and needs no account. Everything runs on your device.

Because the timer is just a web page, it works the same on a phone, a tablet, a laptop or a classroom computer. Open it before you start cooking, put it on the big screen for a quiz round, or keep it beside your notes during a revision session.
