The test runs in your browser. The 5-second sample stays in memory only.
Press the button, allow the microphone and speak. You should see the level move and the waveform react.
Troubleshooting
- Permission blocked: click the lock or camera icon in the address bar and set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page. In Safari: Safari › Settings for This Website › Microphone.
- Wrong device: choose another microphone in the list above. Bluetooth headsets sometimes need a moment to switch on.
- Muted: check the mute switch on your headset, the volume of the input in your system sound settings, and any keyboard mute key.
- In use by another app: close meeting apps, recorders or other tabs that use the microphone, then press Start test again.
- On macOS and Windows, make sure the browser is allowed to use the microphone in the system privacy settings.

Frequently asked questions
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The audio is analysed in your browser. The 5-second sample is kept in memory only so you can play it back, and it disappears when you leave the page.
Why does it say it can’t hear anything?
The wrong microphone may be selected, it may be muted in your system or on the headset, or another app may be using it. Follow the troubleshooting tips on the page.
How do I allow the microphone again after blocking it?
Click the lock icon next to the address, set Microphone to Allow and reload. In Safari use Settings for This Website.
Can I test a Bluetooth headset?
Yes. Pick it from the device list. Some headsets switch to a lower-quality call mode when the microphone is active.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in modern mobile browsers. You will see the same meter and can record a sample.
Make sure people can hear you
Before an important meeting, an online class or a recording session, it is worth taking ten seconds to check that your microphone works. This test shows a live level meter and a waveform that move as you speak, plus a peak marker that shows your loudest moment. If the sound is very low or silent, the page says so and explains what to check.
You can choose between several microphones, which is useful with laptops, webcams, USB mics and Bluetooth headsets. Record five seconds and play them back to hear what others will hear. If something goes wrong, the page recognises the type of problem, such as blocked permission, no device or a device used by another app, and shows the matching fix for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. Your audio is processed only in your browser and is never uploaded.
The same checks help when you are choosing between a laptop microphone and a headset, comparing two USB microphones, or trying to find out why a call partner says you sound quiet. It takes a few seconds and needs no software or account.
