Tips and limits

  • Take the original at arm’s length or with a helper, in even light, with the face centred and a lot of space around the head so the crop has room to work.
  • Always check the exact dimensions and file-size rules of the office or website that will receive the photo; they take priority over any generic preset.
  • Print shops usually want the physical size (such as 35 × 45 mm) at 300 DPI, while online forms usually want pixel dimensions.

Resize Passport Photo

Passport and ID photo requirements vary by country and by the form you are filling in, but three sizes come up again and again: 35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 inches and 4 × 6 cm. This page offers each at 300 DPI, which is 413 × 531, 600 × 600 and 472 × 709 pixels. Pick the one your application asks for and the photo is centred and cropped to it.

The tool only changes the size. Rules about the background color, head position, expression and file size come from the authority that issues the document, so read them before you upload. If your photo needs a plain white background, use the background remover first and read the white background guide. To meet an upload limit afterwards, run the result through the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the size of a passport photo in pixels?

At 300 DPI, 35 × 45 mm is 413 × 531 pixels, 2 × 2 inches is 600 × 600 pixels and 4 × 6 cm is 472 × 709 pixels.

Does this tool make the background white?

No, it only changes the size. To make the background white, use the background remover first.

How do I resize an image to a specific size in pixels?

Add the image, choose “Pixels”, type the width or height you need and press “Resize images”. Keep the ratio locked to avoid stretching.

How do I resize a photo by percentage?

Choose “Percent” and drag the slider. 50% halves the width and the height, which gives a file about a quarter of the pixel count.

What is the difference between resizing and compressing?

Resizing changes the number of pixels. Compressing keeps the pixels but stores them more efficiently. For the smallest file, do both.
