How to Make a Photo Background White

3 min read

To make a photo background white, open the background remover, add a portrait, choose “Person / portrait”, press Remove background, then select the white background and download the result. The cut-out is done by an AI model in your browser and takes a few seconds.

White backgrounds are common for ID, passport and application photos. This guide covers the whole routine, including how to get the size and file size most forms ask for.

Steps

Start from a photo taken in even light with your face clearly visible. Standing a step away from the wall avoids harsh shadows behind you.

  1. 1

    Open the background remover

Go to Remove Background and add your portrait. JPG, PNG and WebP work, and iPhone photos can be converted first with HEIC to JPG.

  2. 2

    Choose “Person / portrait”

This model is built for people and handles hair and shoulders better than the general one. Use “Object / general” only for products and pets.

  3. 3

    Press Remove background

The first time, the tool downloads the model, about 26 MB for people, and saves it on your device. After that it starts straight away. Wait for the cut-out to appear.

  4. 4

    Select the white background

Under Background, choose White. The preview shows your portrait on plain white. Keep “Smooth edges” on for a cleaner outline, and compare with the original.

  5. 5

    Download the PNG

Tap Download PNG. If a form needs a JPG, convert it with PNG to JPG, where you can pick white again as the fill color.

  6. 6

Set the size and file size

Many forms ask for exact dimensions and a maximum size. Use Resize Image for common passport sizes, then compress to 100 KB if needed.

Getting a good source photo

The best cut-outs come from photos where you contrast with the wall behind you. Avoid clothes in the same color as the background, keep your hair out of your eyes, and use soft light from the front, such as a window. Hold the phone at eye level and keep your head centered with some space above it so the crop has room to work.

For official documents, the rules come from the authority that issues them: size, head position, expression and background shade. This tool changes the background and size; it does not check your photo against those rules, so read them before you upload. A tight crop around the head and shoulders is often needed too.

Fine-tuning the result

Zoom into the preview and look at the edges around the hair, ears and shoulders before you download. A small amount of smoothing makes the outline look natural; too much can make it look cut out. Compare with the original to be sure nothing important was lost, and try the other photo type if the first attempt looks wrong.

The download is a PNG, which can be large. If a form wants a JPG, convert it with white as the fill color, then compress it to the size limit. Keep the original photo and the PNG in case you need to try again with a different crop.

Common problems

  • Parts of my hair or shoulder are missing

Try the photo again with a plainer wall and better light. Turning “Smooth edges” on or off can also help. Photos where the hair is the same color as the background are the hardest.

  • The background has a faint halo

Choose the white background and keep smoothing on. If a halo is still visible, take a new photo against a light, even wall.

  • The model is slow to download

The people model is about 26 MB and downloads once. On a slow connection it can take a minute; the next photos start immediately.

  • The form says the photo is too big

Resize it to the requested pixels, then use the 100 KB or 200 KB compressor. White backgrounds compress well.
