How to Convert iPhone Photos to JPG
3 min read
To convert iPhone photos to JPG, open the HEIC to JPG tool in Safari, choose your photos, keep JPG selected and tap Convert. The JPG files download straight to your phone, one by one or in a single ZIP.
iPhones save photos as HEIC to keep files small, but many websites, forms and Windows computers cannot open that format. Converting solves the problem for the photos you already have, and one setting stops it happening with new ones.
Steps
You need an iPhone with Safari and the photos in your Photos app. No app or account is required.
- 1
Open the converter in Safari
Go to HEIC to JPG and tap the drop area. Your iPhone offers its photo picker.
- 2
Choose your photos
Pick one photo or many. Selecting a whole album works too, and the photos are converted one after another so the phone does not run out of memory.
- 3
Check the settings
JPG is selected by default with a quality of 90, which looks the same as the original for almost every use. Location and camera details are removed from the copies unless you tick the option to keep them.
- 4
Tap Convert
The first conversion loads a decoder, so it takes a moment longer. After that each photo takes a second or two.
- 5
Download the JPG files
Tap Download for a single photo, or Download all for a ZIP. Safari asks you to confirm, and the files go to the Downloads folder in the Files app.
- 6
Use the photos where you need them
Upload the JPG files to your form or website straight from the Files app. To add one back to your Photos library, open it in Files, tap Share and choose Save Image.
Make new photos JPG from now on
If you would rather your iPhone saved JPG in the first place, open Settings, choose Camera, then Formats, and select Most Compatible. New photos are then taken as JPG instead of HEIC. The trade-off is that files get larger, so you use more storage. Photos you already took stay as they are, which is when the converter helps.
Once you have JPGs, you can make them lighter with the image compressor or put several into one document with JPG to PDF. For other format changes, such as PNG to WebP, use Convert Image.
What happens to your photo during conversion
Conversion keeps the pixel dimensions of your photo and re-encodes it as JPG, which is a lossy format. At quality 90 the difference is practically invisible, but each extra save at a lower quality gives up a little more detail, so convert from the original HEIC once instead of converting a JPG again and again.
Your originals stay in the Photos app, untouched. If the JPG is bigger than you would like, lower the quality a little or run it through the compressor afterwards. And if you plan to send many photos to a Windows user, a single ZIP is often easier to share than dozens of separate files.
Common problems
The converted file is much bigger than the HEIC
That is normal. HEIC is more efficient than JPG, so the same picture takes more space as JPG. Lower the quality to 80, or compress the result afterwards.
The location data is gone
It is removed by default for privacy. If you need it, switch on “Keep photo details (EXIF)” before converting; only JPG output can carry it.
A big album stops partway
Convert in batches of a few dozen photos. Keep Safari open and the screen on while it works.
The decoder cannot be loaded
You may be offline. Check your connection and try again; the decoder is loaded once and then reused.
