Tips and limits

  • Use WebP for pictures on your own website or blog, and JPG for anything you send to other people or upload to forms.
  • If you already compressed the JPG heavily, converting it again will not shrink it much further.
  • Some browsers, such as older versions of Safari, cannot write WebP. There the page saves JPG instead and tells you.

JPG to WebP

WebP is a modern image format designed for the web. At a similar visual quality it usually produces files roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG, which means faster pages and less data for your visitors. This page converts JPG photos to WebP with the output already chosen, one picture or a whole batch.

A quality of 80–90% is a safe starting point for photos. Check the size column in the results: if a particular picture does not get smaller, keep the JPG. Every current browser can show WebP, but some older apps, email programs and upload forms cannot, so keep a JPG copy for those. To go back, use WebP to JPG, or shrink the file further with the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to WebP?

Add your JPG photos, keep WebP selected, choose a quality and press convert. Download the new files, or a ZIP for several.

Is WebP better than JPG?

For websites, usually yes: it is smaller at similar quality. For compatibility with older software and forms, JPG is still the safer choice.

How do I convert an image to JPG, PNG or WebP?

Add the image, choose the output format, set the quality if it applies, and press “Convert images”. Then download the result.

What happens to transparent areas when I save as JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color you choose, white by default.

Which format is best for photos?

JPG is the most compatible, and WebP is smaller at similar quality when the destination supports it.
