How to Merge PDF Files on Android

4 min read

To merge PDFs on an Android phone, open the merge tool in Chrome, select your files, arrange them and tap Merge. The combined PDF is saved to your Downloads folder, and no app has to be installed.

The steps are the same on Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi and most other phones, because everything happens in the browser. Menu names in your file picker can differ a little between brands.

Steps

You need Chrome (or another recent browser) and your PDFs on the phone, for example in Downloads, in Google Drive or in a WhatsApp or Telegram folder.

  1. 1

Get the PDFs onto your phone

Download any PDF that is still in an email or a chat. Files you already opened from WhatsApp, Gmail or Telegram are usually in the Downloads folder or in that app’s own documents folder.

  2. 2

Open the merge tool in Chrome

Go to Merge PDF and tap the drop area. Android opens its document picker.

  3. 3

    Select several files at once

In the picker, use the menu to switch to the folder where your PDFs are. Touch and hold the first file, then tap the others to select more than one, and confirm. You can also add files one by one with “Add more files”.

  4. 4

    Arrange the order

The list shows the files in the order they will appear. Drag a file by its handle to move it, or use the “Move earlier” and “Move later” buttons. Remove any file you added by mistake.

  5. 5

    Tap Merge

The button at the bottom of the screen starts the merge. A few ordinary documents take seconds. Keep Chrome in the foreground until the result appears.

  6. 6

    Download and open the result

Tap Download. Chrome shows a notification when the file is saved, and tapping it opens the PDF. You can also find it in the Files app under Downloads, and share it from there.

Which method is best for you?

Many Android phones can print or scan to PDF, and some PDF apps can merge, but those usually mean installing something, creating an account or accepting a watermark. A browser tool is the lighter option when you only need to do this now and then, and it works the same on any phone.

If your PDFs are scans stored as photos, skip the merging step and turn the pictures directly into one document with JPG to PDF. To fix a page that ended up in the wrong place, open the result in Organize PDF.

Good habits when you combine documents

Open each PDF once before merging to check it is the version you want and the right way up. Fixing a page afterwards means another round. Name the files so they sort in order, such as 01, 02 and 03, and give the final file a name that includes its purpose and the date.

Your originals are never changed, so keep them until the recipient confirms the merged file arrived intact. Android phones often keep files in several places, such as Downloads, WhatsApp media and cloud folders. If you cannot see a file in the picker, open the menu in the picker and check the other storage locations before you assume it is missing.

Common problems

  • I can only select one file at a time

Some file pickers need a long press on the first file before they allow multiple selection. If yours does not, add the files one at a time with “Add more files”.

  • Chrome says the download was blocked

Tap the notification or the lock icon in the address bar, allow downloads for the site and try again.

  • The page reloads and I lose my list

On phones with little memory, the browser can drop a background tab. Close other apps and tabs, keep Chrome open while merging, and merge fewer files at a time.

  • A file will not open or merge

It may be damaged or password-protected. Try opening it normally first; if it needs a password, remove it in the app that created it and use the new copy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I merge PDF files on Android for free?

Open the merge tool in Chrome, select your PDFs, order them and tap Merge. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark to the result.

Where is the merged PDF saved on my Android phone?

In your Downloads folder, which you can open from the Chrome notification or from the Files app.
