How to Merge PDF Files on iPhone

4 min read

You can merge PDF files on an iPhone from Safari without installing an app: open the merge tool, pick your PDFs from the Files app, put them in order and download one combined file. It takes about a minute, and the finished PDF lands in your Files app.

This works on any recent iPhone and on an iPad. Below is every step, plus fixes for the things that most often go wrong.

Steps

You need an iPhone with Safari and your PDFs saved somewhere you can reach, such as the Files app, iCloud Drive or your Downloads folder.

  1. 1

Save your PDFs in the Files app

If the PDFs are email attachments or arrived in a chat, open each one, tap the Share button and choose “Save to Files”. Putting them in one folder, such as Downloads, makes them easy to find in a moment.

  2. 2

Open the merge tool in Safari

Go to Merge PDF and tap the large drop area. On a phone it works as a button that opens your iPhone’s file picker.

  3. 3

    Choose the files

Browse to the folder with your PDFs and tap each one you want. You can add more files afterwards with the “Add more files” button, so you do not have to get everything right the first time.

  4. 4

    Put the files in order

The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the merged PDF. Drag a file by its handle to move it, or use the “Move earlier” and “Move later” buttons if dragging feels fiddly on a small screen. Remove a file with its remove button.

  5. 5

    Tap the Merge button

The action bar at the bottom of the screen reads “Merge” followed by the number of files. Tap it and wait a few seconds. Keep Safari open and the screen awake while it works.

  6. 6

    Download and find your file

Tap Download and confirm when Safari asks whether to download the file. Then tap the download icon in Safari’s address bar to open it. It is also in the Files app, in the Downloads folder. To send it, open the file and tap the Share button.

Keep it light on a phone

Each PDF can be up to 200 MB, but an iPhone has far less working memory than a laptop. A handful of ordinary documents merges without any trouble. For a big batch of scans, build the PDF from photos with JPG to PDF after compressing the images, or merge in two rounds and then merge the two results.

The merged file keeps the size and rotation of every page, so a landscape page stays landscape. If one page is the wrong way up or in the wrong place, open the result in Organize PDF to rotate, move or delete it.

Good habits when you combine documents

Open each PDF once before merging to check that it is the right version and the right way up. Fixing a page afterwards means another round, and a quick look takes seconds. Name your files so they sort in order, such as “01 Cover”, “02 Report” and “03 Appendix”, then rename the finished file with its purpose and the date, because you will be searching for it later.

A merged PDF is a copy. Your originals stay exactly where they are, so keep them until the recipient confirms that the combined file arrived and opens correctly. If the document is meant to be printed, remember that a mix of A4 and Letter pages is kept as it is and may print with different margins.

Common problems

  • The file picker does not show my PDF

The file may live inside another app rather than in Files. Open it in that app, tap Share, choose “Save to Files” and try again.

  • Nothing seems to happen after I tap Merge

Large files take longer. Wait a little, and do not switch to another app. If you see a memory message, merge fewer files at a time and combine the results afterwards.

  • The tool says a file is password-protected

Protected PDFs cannot be merged. Open the original in the app that made it, remove the password, save a copy and add that copy instead.

  • I cannot find the merged file

Tap the download icon in Safari’s address bar to see recent downloads, or open the Files app and look in the Downloads folder on iCloud Drive or on your iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free way to merge PDFs on an iPhone without an app?

Yes. Open the merge tool in Safari, add your files and download the result. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

How many PDFs can I merge on an iPhone?

There is no fixed count. Each file can be up to 200 MB, and the real limit is your phone’s memory. If a big batch fails, merge it in two or three smaller rounds.

Are my PDFs uploaded when I merge them?

No. The merging happens in Safari on your iPhone, so the files are not sent to a server.
