How to Convert Word to PDF Without Software

4 min read

To convert Word to PDF without any software, open the Word to PDF tool, add your .docx file, check the preview and press Save as PDF. In the print window that opens, choose “Save as PDF” instead of a printer and save the file.

It works on a computer, with no copy of Word installed, and keeps right-to-left Arabic, tables and numbered lists. The text in the PDF stays selectable and searchable.

Steps

You need the document saved as .docx. Older .doc files must be re-saved as .docx first, in Word or Google Docs.

  1. 1

Open Word to PDF and add the file

Go to Word to PDF and drag your .docx file onto the drop area, or click it to browse. A preview of the document appears after a moment.

  2. 2

    Read through the preview

Scroll the pages and look for anything that moved: images, tables, headers and footers. Complicated layouts can differ slightly from Word, so this is the time to notice.

  3. 3

    Choose page size and margins

Keep the sizes from the document, or pick A4 or Letter. For margins you can keep the document’s own, or choose Narrow or Normal.

  4. 4

    Press Save as PDF

The tool opens your browser’s print window. This is how the PDF is made, and it is what keeps Arabic letters joined and the text selectable.

  5. 5

Choose “Save as PDF” as the printer

On a computer, set the destination or printer to “Save as PDF” (in Safari, use the PDF button in the print dialog). Turn off “Headers and footers” if you see that option, then click Save.

  6. 6

Open the PDF and check it

Open the saved file and flip through the pages once before you send it. If something moved, adjust the margins or page size and save again.

When another method is better

If you already have Word, Pages or Google Docs, each can export a PDF itself, and that is the most faithful way to keep special fonts and complex layouts. This tool is for the other times: a shared or locked computer, a Chromebook, or a document someone sent you that you only need to read or return as a PDF.

Once you have the PDF, you can sign it, merge it with other files or pull out just the pages you need. If your Word document contains large photos and the PDF is too heavy to email, compress the pictures in the document first.

Prepare the document for a clean PDF

A few minutes of preparation in Word give a better PDF. Use common fonts, check where pages break, update any table of contents, and accept or reject tracked changes so the revisions do not show. Resize very large photos before inserting them, because the PDF carries their full weight.

For Arabic documents, scroll through the preview and look at numbering, tables and mixed Arabic and English lines, since those are the places where direction problems show up first. If the preview matches what you expect, the PDF will too. Keep the .docx beside the PDF so you can fix a typo later without rebuilding everything.

Common problems

  • The layout is a little different from Word

Text boxes, advanced columns, tracked changes and unusual fonts are the usual causes. Simplify those parts in the original, or export from Word itself for an exact match.

  • Fonts look different

If a font is not installed on the device, the browser substitutes a similar one. Use common fonts such as Arial or Times New Roman, or an Arabic font installed on the computer, for predictable results.

  • I do not see a “Save as PDF” option

Choose a different destination in the print window; on Chrome and Edge “Save as PDF” is in the destination list. On Safari use the PDF menu at the bottom left of the dialog.

  • It does not work with my .doc file

Only .docx is supported. Open the .doc in Word or Google Docs and save it as .docx, then try again.

Frequently asked questions

Open the Word to PDF tool, add your .docx, check the preview and choose “Save as PDF” in the print window.

Does it support Arabic Word documents?

Yes. Right-to-left text, mixed Arabic and English, tables and numbering are kept, and the PDF text stays selectable.
